This small group tour is a unique experience to witness rare and endangered wildlife roaming freely in their natural habitats of the Atherton Tablelands tropical rainforests of Far North Queensland. This lush rainforest is home to a variety of birds, animals, fish, reptiles and amphibians, many that are not found elsewhere in Australia, which can be discovered throughout this afternoon and night time wildlife spotting tour. Spot possums, platypus, birds, snakes, frogs, kangaroos and rare tree kangaroos, and flying foxes throughout the tour.
Begin the tour with a scenic, winding drive, climbing 800 metres above sea level up the Gillies Range to Cairns' Atherton Tablelands, before journeying on to observe a fascinating 800-year-old, Cathedral Fig Tree with a giant root system. Break for afternoon tea, at the stunning Lake Barrine, a volcanic crater lake nestled amongst rainforest, followed by a walk through the rainforest to visit the towering Twin Bull Kauri Pines. Your tour takes you to a private viewing area, where you can watch a pair of platypus swim in their natural surrounds.
You will be able to stop for a delicious dinner, warm up with a tea, coffee or hot chocolate, before heading out for a night tour, where around 80% of Australian animals are active at night, and the rainforest comes alive after dark. Grab a flashlight for spotlighting, to a huge Curtain Fig Tree is host to various species of nocturnal wildlife. On clear nights, the minimal light pollution also allows star spotters to enjoy taking in the Southern Cross and Milky Way.
