Canyoning in the Mountains

feature image
One of my most memorable adventures would have to be the time we went canyoning. Be prepared for a good workout—canyoning is an active day filled with incline walks, abseiling, swimming, and scuttling along rocks. It’s an experience you need to try for yourself, for sure!

Getting Ready for the Adventure

The day started with getting all our gear and backpacks ready, with the guides taking us through everything we’d need. Once we were all set, it was time to hit the track and bushwalk for about 40 minutes. The walk through the mountains requires a good level of fitness, especially with the steep areas, so wearing shoes with a good grip is a must.

Abseiling Into the Canyon

After the walk down, we changed into our wetsuits and got ready for the fun part—abseiling! We descended a 10m cliff face into the canyon, with the guides right there with us every step of the way. They made sure we were all geared up and felt safe as we made our way down into the canyon, which was such an exhilarating experience. Once we were all down, we unhooked and waited for everyone in our group.

Exploring the Canyon

Officially in the canyon, we waded, swam, jumped, and slid our way down, exploring this incredible landscape. The canyon was breathtaking! This and the abseiling were definitely my favourite parts of the day, offering such a unique way to experience the Blue Mountains.

The End of the Journey

As we made our way out of the canyon towards the end, I felt such a sense of accomplishment. Canyoning is not the typical adventure I would’ve booked myself, but now that I’ve done it, I’d do it again and again. The only part I wouldn’t recommend was trying to put on dry clothes after removing the wetsuits—note to self: bring loose active shorts, not tights next time!

Hot Tip

  • Have a big breakfast beforehand and pack plenty of water and snacks.
  • Don’t forget to wear swimmers and pack dry clothes, as you’ll be swimming in the canyon.
