Charge south out of Airlie Beach at 10am for a full day in the Clarke Ranges, where Eungella National Park spreads across more than 51,700 hectares of cloud wrapped mountain rainforest. Cut off for thousands of years, it holds the longest unbroken stretch of subtropical rainforest in Australia. Hit the walking track beneath the canopy to the Sky Window lookout for a straight shot across the ranges.

Then it is on to Broken River, one of the very few places in Australia where you can find a platypus in the wild. Stand still, keep your eyes on the water and wait for the ripple. Eungella means Land of the Clouds in the local Aboriginal language, and the mist rolling through the ranges makes the case. A stop at the Pinnacle Hotel, a proper Aussie country pub, closes out the day before the run back to Airlie Beach.
