While coral reefs only cover a small amount of the earth’s surface, they’re home to some of the most important biodiversity on the planet. You’ll love exploring the world below with flippers and an oxygen tank, marvelling at the otherworldly sights. The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s best scuba diving locations, so dive in and enjoy!

Is the Gold Coast good for scuba diving?

Move over Great Barrier Reef – the Gold Coast is an incredible dive location, too! The subtropical climate and water temperature of the Gold Coast region make it one of the most relaxing and comfortable places to scuba dive. And because the climate is so perfect, an abundance of marine creatures thrive on the Gold Coast too. Home to warm daytime temperatures all year round, Gold Coast is the perfect place to explore the ocean.

Another reason that the Gold Coast is brilliant for scuba diving is the fact that it has a huge variety of diving options, unlike most other scuba sites in the country. From shore diving sites to protected inshore sites and even offshore reefs and shipwrecks, the Gold Coast is home to some of the best natural marine scapes in the world.

Where to go scuba diving on the Gold Coast?

With an abundance of different locations to indulge in scuba diving on the Gold Coast, we’re here to help you dive into the very best:

The Gold Coast Seaway

Boasting five main dive sites, the Gold Coast Seaway is a local’s favourite. Home to an estuary entrance, your best bet is going on high tide – this is when the water is clearest and the current is weakest.

  • South Wall boasts a huge array of colourful fish. It’s close to the wall and is ideal for beginners learning to scuba dive.
  • North Wall is amazing for glimpsing at schools of pelagic fish which pass along the coast. You’re also more likely to see a bronze whaler shark here!
  • South West Wall is another great option for new scuba divers – offering a gradual decline of 5 metres. The shallow water draws seahorse and anemone fish to play!

Wave Break Island

Perfect for new scuba divers, this lovely spot gently dips to 11 metres and boasts protection from a rocky wall. Home to colourful fish, this is a popular spot for dive companies.

Cook Island

Famous for its abundance of turtles, Cook Island is only a few hundred metres from the mainland. Its glorious beaches are home to an amazing array of sea life, so keep your eyes peeled!
