Explore the bustling marine habitat around the S.S. Yongala Wreck on the Great Barrier Reef on this full day certified SCUBA diving tour. This dive spot is a hub for marine life big and small and the wreck itself is a spectacular sight to see.
Departing from Townsville or Magnetic Island in the early morning, you’ll head out towards the wreck and have a site and diving briefing, before you kick off one of your two dive sessions for the day. You’ll quickly see why this wreck is renowned for having one of the most abundant marine habitats and is a not-to-miss diving destination on the Great Barrier Reef.
The S.S. Yongala sank in a cyclone in 1911 and due to its remote location on the reef it has remained relatively untouched. The wreck begins 15 metres below the surface and goes as deep as 29 metres, so get ready for an exciting adventure.
Protected under the Historic Shipwreck Act (1976), the artifacts, marine life and variety of corals that cover the wreck are mesmerising. You can often see turtles, sea snakes, giant trevally, Queensland gropers, eagle rays, manta rays, sharks and countless tropical fish. You can even see humpback whales messing about and sometimes breaching during their migration season.
The S.S. Yongala Wreck is a SCUBA diver’s dream that you need to tick off your bucket list.
This experience is part of our Low-Footprint Adventures range because it’s ECO certified by Ecotourism Australia.
