Best things to do in Margaret River

With stunning beaches, wineries, breathtaking natural wonders and action-packed experiences, there are plenty of good reasons to visit both the town and the wider Margaret River region and lots of fun things to do while you’re there.

Whether you’re making the short journey from Perth, or visiting this unique part of Western Australia from interstate or overseas, it’s a destination not to miss.

To clear up any confusion, Margaret River is the name given to a town (9 kilometres inland from the Indian Ocean) and the region as a whole. Both of those are named after the river of the same name.  The Margaret River region extends from Dunsborough and Busselton in the north to Augusta in the south.

Make the most of your time in this special part of southwest Western Australia by adding some exciting activities to your itinerary. As well as ticking off popular ‘must do’ activities like the Busselton jetty walk and sampling the delicious food and wine, we’ve got all kinds of ways for adrenaline junkies and adventurers to take their visit to the next level.

Make sure these are on your adventure hit list:

Mountain biking

There are some incredible mountain biking trails in the Margaret River region, so it’s only right that adventure lovers get out to explore the trails on two wheels. The Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park has plenty to offer absolute beginners as well as more experienced mountain bike riders. This exhilarating activity is some of the most fun you can have on two wheels!

Scenic flights, canoeing and wine tours

Mention you’re planning a trip to Margaret River to someone who knows the area, and it probably won’t take long for the subject of wineries or scenery to come up. And for good reason as the region is famous for both.

A scenic flight over Margaret River is an amazing way to take in bird’s eye views, travel in style and add a firm tick to your bucket list. There’s even the option of hopping on a private charter aircraft wine tour from Perth to Margaret River. Another of our Margaret River tours with a difference combines wine tasting and canoeing.

On this full day tour you’ll paddle along Margaret River taking in views of lush scenery as you go, then stop for a winery lunch and then round off the day with a 4WD adventure along a secluded section of the Cape to Cape track. Sounds like a perfect day out!

Stand up paddle boarding

Whether you’re a first timer looking to learn to stand up paddle board, or you’ve done it before and are keen to get back on the water, Margaret River is a great place to try stand up paddle boarding.

A SUP adventure tour of Blackwood River National Park has plenty of twists and turns, giving you chance to practice your skills, get a good workout, explore a stunning wilderness location and, most importantly, have a really fun day out. Perfect for families, couples, solo travellers and anyone keen for an experience that really makes a splash.

Horse riding

Saddle up for a Margaret River horse riding adventure through beautiful Australian bushland at twilight. There are few better ways to get off the beaten track than on horse back and, with the heat of the day gone and plenty of wildlife about, the evening is an ideal time to ride. Once your fully-guided tour is over there’s even chance to sample a glass of wine if you like.
