If you’ve never been skydiving before, you’re sure to have a few questions about how things will go, how you’ll feel and what the experience will entail. To help put your mind at ease, we’ve answered some of the most common skydiving questions people ask, from how high you can skydive to what the scariest part of the whole experience is. Read on to learn more about skydiving and what you can expect!
How high can you skydive in Australia?
How high can you skydive in Australia?

In Australia, the highest skydives will see you exit your aircraft at approximately 15,000 feet. If you prefer metric measurements, that’s just over 4,570 metres! Not every skydive centre will allow you to jump from this altitude, so it’s essential to do your research before booking your high-adrenaline adventure.

At what speed do skydivers fall?
At what speed do skydivers fall?

While it will take a few seconds to reach your full speed, you can expect to fall at approximately 200 kilometres per hour during a skydive. This speed may vary from person to person and jump to jump, with factors such as wind speed and diving position influencing how fast you’ll freefall.

How scary is skydiving?
How scary is skydiving?

While you might think that skydiving will be a terrifying experience, chances are that it won’t be quite as scary in reality. The steps leading up to your skydiving experience, from your safety briefing to making your final move towards the plane door, will see your heart rate increase and anxiety levels rise. Once you do finally make your jump, however, you’re more likely to feel exhilarated rather than scared as you feel the air move around you and start to soak up the scenery down below. Throughout every step of your skydive, your qualified instructor will be on hand to guide you and ensure your jump goes smoothly.

Does skydiving hurt to land?
Does skydiving hurt to land?

Much like the other aspects of skydiving, from the nerve-wracking initial ascent to the moment you leap from your plane, it’s normal to feel a little worried about your landing. However, there’s no need to worry as skydiving touchdowns are generally quite gentle. Your parachute will help slow down your descent, and you’ll eventually come to a stop, reaching solid ground on either your feet or your bottom.

What's the scariest part of skydiving?
What's the scariest part of skydiving?

For many, just the thought of skydiving is sure to be more than just a little daunting. However, for most people who do go skydiving, the scariest part is actually the lead-up to the main event. Getting strapped in, making your ascent and preparing to head out the plane door is likely to see your anxiety levels rise and the adrenaline start to build. You might be unsure of what your experience will be like, how it will feel to jump and what the next few minutes will hold. It’s at this time that it’s important to take a few deep breaths and remember that your qualified instructor will be on hand to guide you through your skydive.

Can I skydive if I am afraid of heights?
Can I skydive if I am afraid of heights?

If you have a fear of heights, skydiving might be at the very bottom of your to-do list, but it may not actually be as scary as you would think. Unlike when you climb a ladder, make your way to the edge of a tall diving board or head to the top floor of a building, your brain finds it difficult to understand altitude, meaning that you’re less likely to feel scared once you leave the plane, thousands of feet above ground level. While skydiving isn’t a remedy for your phobia, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure unlike any other. And, of course, if you love the feeling, you can always book a session or two more!

How cold is skydiving?
How cold is skydiving?

Even though you’ll technically be closer to the sun when you skydive, the air around you will actually be cooler than it is on the ground. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the altitude of your skydive, the colder it will be! Some estimate that if you're 14,000 feet up, the temperature is approximately 15? cooler than at ground level. To help keep yourself warm and toasty, be sure to follow your skydiving centre’s clothing recommendations.

Do your ears pop when you skydive?
Do your ears pop when you skydive?

If you’ve ever flown anywhere before, you’d know that your ears can start to feel a little stuffy as the altitude increases. This happens because of changes in the air pressure around you. When you go skydiving, you may experience a similar sensation, and your ears may ‘pop’ to help equalise any air that’s trapped in your middle ear. It’s not unusual for your ears to still feel a little stuffy once you’re back on solid ground, so some simple exercises, such as chewing gum, swallowing and yawning, can help get things back to normal.

Is there a weight limit for skydiving?
Is there a weight limit for skydiving?

Although limits may vary between skydiving centres, most operators in Australia have a maximum weight limit between 110 and 115 kilograms. This limit may vary between locations and operators, so it’s important to check the weight allowances of your chosen skydive experience before you book to avoid disappointment.
